The Eagle’s EGGs: fertile or sterile?

چکیده
We present a deep, high spatial resolution (0.35 arcsec FWHM), near-infrared (1–2.5 μm) imaging survey of the Eagle Nebula, M 16, made with the VLT, centred on the famous elephant trunks. We compare these data with the existing HST optical images to search for evidence of ongoing or recent star formation in the trunks, and in particular in the 73 small evaporating gaseous globules (EGGs) on their surface. We find that two of the three HST trunks have relatively massive YSOs in their tips. Most of the EGGs appear to be empty, but some 15% of them do show evidence for associated young low-mass stars or brown dwarfs: in particular, there is a small cluster of such sources seen at the head of the largest trunk.

Fertile offspring derived from mammalian eggs lacking either animal or vegetal poles.
In all animals so far tested, removing either pole of the undivided egg prevents normal development: embryos may arrest early, lack organs, or the adults may be sterile. These experiments have shown that spatial patterning of the egg is of utmost importance for subsequent development. However, the significance of spatial patterning in mammalian eggs is still controversial. To test the importanc...

C RE D IT :M A RC O U LI A N A T he honey bee society was famously described as “The Feminine Monarchy” by the cleric Charles Butler in 1634. Honey bees and their relatives—including all hymenopteran societies—qualify for this label because their colonies are headed by one or a small number of fertile queens. These queens produce a large number of sterile or nearly sterile daughter workers and,...
متن کاملIsolation and Characterization of Sex-Linked Female-Sterile Mutants in DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER with Special Attention to Eggshell Mutants.
To study genes that function mainly or exclusively during oogenesis, we have isolated and analyzed female-sterile mutations, with special emphasis on those that affect eggshell formation. Following treatment that induced 61 to 66% lethals, 8.1% of the 1071 X chromosomes tested carried recessive female sterility mutations (87 isolates), and 8.0% carried partial female-sterile mutations (86 isola...
متن کاملPEST MANAGEMENT Developing a Sterile Insect Release Program for Cactoblastis cactorum (Berg) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae): Effective Overflooding Ratios and Release-Recapture Field Studies
In an effort to continue the development of a sterile insect release program against the invasive cactus moth, Cactoblastis cactorum (Berg), we released partially sterile males alone or in combination with fully sterile females at a 5:1 or 10:1 (treated:fertile) overßooding ratio inside large Þeld cages containing Opuntia stricta Haworth (Haworth) host plants. Insects were allowed to mate and l...
متن کاملAbility of Hydrogen Peroxide and Timsen to Eliminate Artificially Inoculated Salmonella from Fertile Broiler Eggs
Varying levels (10 to 10/egg) of Salmonella Typhimurium were inoculated onto fertile hatching eggs by immersion. After this, the inoculated eggs were untreated (control), water treated, hydrogen peroxide (1.5%) treated, or Timsen treated (n-alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride as a commercial bactericide-fungicide). Hydrogen peroxide was superior to Timsen as an egg treatment to eliminate ar...
